Abstract.

In the article we have made an attempt on the bases of solid research by American theorists and practitioners of bilingual education to disassociate the main myths that most often relate  to this phenomenon, consider its advantages and disadvantages, and ways to improve bilingual education. Bilingual education is one of the priority directions of the foreign language education
development in many developed countries, in particular the USA, where special emphasis is placed on the development of modern foreign languages within bilingual education. American bilingual education professionals fairly evaluate both the results achieved and the disadvantages, realize the problems posed to them, and are ready to solve them, moving towards the requirements of society. Bilingual education belongs to a single holistic educational approach, is an outstanding feature of the content of the education of public schools in the United States of the last third of the XX – beginning of the XXI century.
